Google Business Profile Basics for Small Business
There is one free tool that quietly sends more local customers to small businesses than almost anything else, and a surprising number of owners either skip it or set it up halfway. It is your Google Business Profile, the listing that shows up when someone searches your name or looks for a business like yours nearby. It is the box with your hours, photos, reviews, and a map pin.
When someone searches "coffee near me" or "electrician in my town," Google leans heavily on these profiles to decide what to show. Get yours right and you can show up at the top of local results without paying a cent. Let's walk through how to do that.
First, claim it
Here is something a lot of owners do not realize: Google may have already created a basic listing for your business, built from public information. If you have never claimed it, it might be floating out there with wrong hours or a missing phone number, and you have no control over it.
So step one is to claim your profile. Search your business name on Google, look for a "Own this business?" or "Claim this business" link, and follow the steps. Google will verify that you really run the business, usually by a code sent by mail, phone, or email. Once it is verified, the profile is yours to manage. This is the single most important step, because you cannot fix or improve anything until you control the listing.
Fill in every field, accurately
An incomplete profile looks less trustworthy and shows up less often. Google rewards profiles that give people the full picture. Go through and fill in everything:
- Business name. Use your real name exactly as it appears on your storefront and website. Do not stuff in extra keywords.
- Category. Pick the most accurate main category, then add relevant secondary ones. This tells Google what searches you should appear in.
- Address or service area. If customers come to you, list your address. If you go to them, set your service area instead.
- Phone number. Use a real, local number you actually answer.
- Hours. Keep these current, and update them for holidays. Nothing annoys a customer like showing up to a "closed" sign when Google said you were open.
- Website. Link to your site. More on why this matters below.
- Services and description. Describe what you do in plain, honest language.
Consistency is quietly important
Google likes to see the same information about you everywhere it looks. Your name, address, and phone number should match across your website, your Google profile, your Facebook page, and any local directories. When these all line up, Google trusts the information more and is more confident showing you to searchers.
When they clash, say your website lists an old phone number while your Google profile has the new one, it creates doubt, and doubt can cost you visibility. So pick your official details and make them identical everywhere.
Photos do more than you think
Profiles with good photos get far more attention than bare ones. People want to see what they are walking into or who they are hiring. Add real photos and keep adding them over time:
- The outside of your business, so people recognize it from the street.
- The inside, so they know what to expect.
- Your team, so you feel like real, friendly humans.
- Your work: finished projects, plated food, happy results.
Skip the generic stock images. Real photos of your actual business build more trust and make you look active and open for business.
Reviews are your reputation
Reviews are one of the biggest factors in whether people choose you, and they help you show up more too. You do not need hundreds, but a steady flow of honest, positive reviews makes a real difference.
The simplest way to get them is to ask. After a good job or a happy visit, ask the customer if they would mind leaving a quick review, and make it easy by sending them the link. And reply to your reviews, both the glowing ones and the critical ones. A calm, friendly reply to a complaint tells future customers that you care and you handle problems well. That reassures people more than a perfect score with total silence.
Keep it alive
A profile is not a set-it-and-forget-it thing. Google favors active listings. You do not need to fuss over it daily, but check in regularly:
- Update hours whenever they change, especially around holidays.
- Add fresh photos now and then.
- Post occasional updates about specials, news, or events.
- Answer questions people ask on your listing.
- Keep replying to reviews.
A little attention every few weeks keeps you looking open, current, and trustworthy.
Connect it to your website
Your Google profile and your website work best as a team. The profile gets you found and gives people a quick snapshot. Your website is where they go for the full story: your services in detail, more photos, your prices, and the easy way to book or get a quote.
The link on your profile should send people to a website that actually backs up the good impression. If your profile is polished but your site is broken on a phone or missing key information, you lose people right at the finish line. The two need to match in quality.
