How Much Should You Actually Fit on Your Homepage

Your homepage feels like it has to do everything, so the temptation is to put everything on it. Every service, every detail, your whole history, all the reasons someone should pick you. But a homepage that tries to say everything ends up saying nothing clearly. The skill is not fitting it all in. It is deciding what earns a spot on the most important page you have, and trusting other pages to carry the rest. Here is how to make those calls.

The homepage has one main job

Your homepage is not an encyclopedia. Its job is to answer three questions fast: what do you do, is it for me, and what do I do next. Everything on the page should serve one of those three. If a piece of content does not help a visitor understand you, see themselves as a customer, or take the next step, it is probably weighing the page down rather than helping it.

Give a taste, then link to the full plate

You do not need to explain every service in full on the homepage. Give a short, clear overview, then let people click through to a detailed page if they want more. Think of the homepage as the menu cover and the individual pages as the full menu inside. A quick list of your main services with a link to learn more keeps the homepage light while still pointing every visitor toward exactly what they came for.

Prioritize by what makes you money

When deciding what gets prime space, start with what actually brings in work. If most of your revenue comes from one or two services, those deserve the spotlight, not equal billing with something you do twice a year. It can feel unfair to your smaller offerings, but your homepage is a salesperson, not a democracy. Lead with what pays the bills and let the rest live comfortably on their own pages.

Length is fine if every part earns it

A longer homepage is not automatically bad. Plenty of great sites have a long, scrolling homepage that walks you through the story. The difference is that every section earns its place and flows into the next. Length becomes a problem only when it is padding, repeated points, filler text, sections that exist because you felt you should have them. A long page of strong sections works. A long page of weak ones just makes people scroll away.

When in doubt, move it to its own page

If you are unsure whether something belongs on the homepage, that is usually a sign it should get its own page instead. Detailed pricing, your full story, a big gallery, frequently asked questions, all of these do better as dedicated pages you can link to. This keeps the homepage focused and fast, and it gives each topic room to be done well. A tight homepage plus a few solid supporting pages beats one endless page trying to be all of them at once.

Read it as a stranger would

When you have decided what stays, do one last pass pretending you have never heard of your business. Read only the headings and the first line of each section, the way a real visitor skims. Can you tell what the company does, who it helps, and what to do next, in about ten seconds? If something important is missing from that quick skim, pull it up higher. If something is there that a first time visitor would not care about, it can probably move to another page. This stranger test keeps the homepage honest and stops it from filling back up with things that matter to you but not to the person deciding whether to call.
