How to Check Your Website on a Phone Before Customers Do

Here is an uncomfortable fact for most small business owners. You probably built or reviewed your website on a computer, sitting at a desk, on a big screen. But most of the people who visit your site are looking at it on a phone, standing in a checkout line or on the couch. Those are two completely different experiences of the same website, and only one of them counts, because it is the one your customers actually have. If you have never carefully looked at your own site on a phone, you have never really seen what your customers see.

Why the phone view is the one that matters

Most local searches happen on a phone. Someone is out, they need a plumber or a place for dinner or a florist, and they pull out their phone and search. That is your visitor. If your site looks great on your laptop but is a cramped, sideways mess on a phone, you are losing the exact customers who were closest to choosing you.

The problem is that a website does not automatically look good small just because it looks good big. Text can end up tiny, buttons can end up too close together to tap, images can spill off the edge, and the layout can break in ways you will never notice from your desk. The only way to know is to look.

The phone check, step by step

You do not need any special tools. You need your own phone and ten honest minutes.

  • Open your actual site on your phone. Not a preview, not the builder's phone view. Type your real web address into your phone browser and load it like a stranger would.
  • Read the top of the page first. Can you tell who you are and what you do in a couple of seconds, without pinching to zoom. If you have to zoom to read the main message, that is the first fix.
  • Check the text size. You should be able to read the body text comfortably at arm's length. If it is tiny, that is a real problem, not a nitpick.
  • Try to tap every button. Are the buttons big enough to tap with a thumb without hitting the wrong one. Buttons crammed together are a common phone failure.
  • Tap the phone number and the email. On a phone, tapping your number should start a call and tapping your email should start a message. Confirm both actually work.
  • Scroll the whole way down. Watch for images that run off the side, text that gets cut off, or sections that overlap. Anything that spills or overlaps needs fixing.

The things that break most often on phones

A few problems show up again and again when a desktop site meets a small screen.

  • Text too small to read without zooming, which makes people give up.
  • Buttons too small or too close to tap reliably, so people mis-tap and get frustrated.
  • Images that overflow the screen, forcing an awkward sideways scroll.
  • Menus that do not work with a thumb, or hide the important links.
  • Pop ups that cannot be closed because the close button is off screen. This one sends people straight back to search.

Look at it like a stranger in a hurry

The mindset matters as much as the checklist. When you check your site, do not review it like the proud owner who knows where everything is. Look at it like a stranger who is a little impatient, on a so so connection, holding the phone in one hand. Can that person figure out what you do, decide to trust you, and reach you, all with their thumb, in under a minute. If yes, your phone experience is doing its job. If they would give up, you just found exactly why some visitors never call.

Check again after every change

The phone view is not a one time thing. Every time you add a section, swap a photo, or change your text, something can shift on the small screen even if it looks fine on the big one. Make the quick phone check a habit after any change. It takes two minutes and saves you from quietly bleeding the mobile customers who make up most of your traffic.

Where we come in

Making a site work beautifully on a phone, not just shrink to fit but genuinely work, is one of the trickiest parts of building your own site, and it is where a lot of do it yourself sites quietly fall apart. That is a core part of what we do. At Catapult we build your site to look and work great on a phone from the start, with readable text, tappable buttons, and a layout that holds together on any screen, and we check the phone view for you.

It is $79 to launch, then $9 a month for hosting with unlimited change requests, so whenever you change something, we make sure it still works on a phone, not just a computer. Most sites go live in about 48 hours, and you keep your own domain. Your customers are on their phones, so your site should be built for them. We would be glad to help.
