How to Do a Five Minute Website Polish Check

You do not need a whole afternoon to improve your website. Most of what quietly costs a small business customers can be caught in about five focused minutes, if you look at your site the right way. The trick is not to admire it like the owner who built it. The trick is to inspect it like a slightly impatient stranger on a phone, running through a short list of the things that actually matter. Here is a five minute polish check you can run today, and rerun any time you change something.

First, get out of owner mode

Before you start, do one mental reset. Stop thinking of this as your site that you know inside out, and start thinking of it as a stranger's site you have never seen, that you are deciding whether to trust with your money. That shift is the whole game. Owners see what they meant to build. Strangers see what is actually there. Your customers are strangers, so borrow their eyes for five minutes.

And do the whole check on your phone, because that is where most of your visitors actually are.

The five minute check

Set a timer if it helps. Move quickly and trust your gut reactions.

  • Minute one: the first impression. Load your homepage cold and look at only the top, before scrolling. Can you tell who you are, what you do, and what to do next, in a couple of seconds. If you have to hunt or zoom, that is your top priority fix.
  • Minute two: read it out loud. Read your main text aloud. You are listening for typos, awkward sentences, and anything confusing. Reading aloud forces you to see the words that are actually there instead of the ones you meant.
  • Minute three: tap everything. Tap every button, menu item, and link, plus your phone number and email. Confirm each one goes where it should and that the phone and email links actually start a call and a message. Note anything broken.
  • Minute four: check the facts. Look at your hours, prices, address, phone, and email as a customer relying on them. Are they all currently true. Outdated details quietly send people to dead ends and make you look unreliable.
  • Minute five: feel the look. Scroll the whole page and notice the overall feeling. Is the spacing even. Does everything line up. Do the colors and fonts match throughout. Is there breathing room, or does it feel crammed. Does anything spill off the side of the screen.

What to do with what you find

You will almost always find something. That is the point, and it is good news, because now you can fix it. Sort what you found into two piles.

  • Fix now, quick wins. Wrong contact details, a broken link, a typo in a headline, leftover placeholder text, a fact that is out of date. These are fast to fix and expensive to leave. Do them right away.
  • Fix soon, bigger jobs. A homepage top that does not make your message clear, a layout that feels crammed, photos that are all different shapes, a site that loads slowly. These take more work but they move the needle most, so put them on a short list and tackle them next.

Make it a habit

The reason a five minute check is so valuable is that a website drifts. Every price change, every holiday hours update, every new photo or service is a chance for something to break or go stale. A quick check after every change, plus a full five minute pass every month or so, keeps your site tidy and trustworthy with almost no effort. It is the website equivalent of wiping down the counter, small and regular beats a giant cleanup once a year.

Small checks, real results

None of the items on this list are hard or expensive. That is exactly why the check is worth doing. The gap between a site that quietly loses customers and one that quietly wins them is usually not a redesign or a bigger budget. It is a handful of small, careless details that five honest minutes would catch. Give your site those minutes and you will almost certainly find something worth a customer.

Where we come in

Running the check is easy. Fixing everything you find, and keeping it fixed as your business changes, is where it gets tedious, especially in a builder that fights you on every edit. That is the part we are happy to carry. At Catapult we build your site polished from the start, and because you get unlimited change requests, whenever your five minute check turns something up, you just tell us and we fix it properly.

It is $79 to launch, then $9 a month for hosting with unlimited change requests, so you never have to wrestle your own site to keep it clean. Most sites go live in about 48 hours, and you keep your own domain. Five minutes of honest looking will show you what to improve, and we would be glad to handle the improving. We would love to help.
