How to Get Your Business on Google
Think about the last time you needed a locksmith, a taco spot, or someone to fix a leaky faucet. You probably pulled out your phone, typed a few words into Google, and picked from whatever showed up. Your customers do the exact same thing. So if your business is not showing up when people search, it does not matter how good you are. To them, you are invisible.
The good news is that getting found on Google is not some dark art reserved for tech wizards. There are a handful of practical steps that make a real difference, and most of them are free. Let us walk through them in plain language.
Start with Google Business Profile
If you only do one thing, do this. Google Business Profile (the free listing that shows up on the map and on the right side of search results) is the single biggest lever for a local business.
Head to google.com/business and claim your listing. Google will ask you to verify that you actually own the business, usually with a postcard, a phone call, or an email. Once you are verified, fill out every single field:
- Your exact business name, the way it appears on your sign
- Your address, or your service area if you go to customers
- Your phone number and website
- Your hours, including holidays
- The categories that describe what you do
The more complete your profile, the more Google trusts it, and the more often it shows you to nearby searchers.
Add photos, and keep them coming
A listing with real photos gets far more clicks than a bare one. Snap pictures of your storefront, your team, your work, and your happy customers (with their permission). You do not need a fancy camera. A clean phone photo in good light does the job.
Try to add a few new photos every month. It signals to Google that your business is active and alive, not abandoned.
Ask for reviews, then actually respond
Reviews are gold. They help you rank higher, and they help nervous first-time customers feel comfortable choosing you. The simplest way to get them is to ask. After you finish a job or a sale, send a quick text or email with a direct link to leave a review.
Then reply to the reviews you get, both the glowing ones and the grumpy ones. A calm, friendly response to a complaint often impresses future customers more than a wall of five-star raves. It shows you care.
You still need a real website
Here is the part people skip. Google Business Profile gets you on the map, but a proper website is what turns a curious searcher into a paying customer. When someone finds your listing, they almost always click through to see more. If there is nothing there, or if the page looks broken and dated, that trust evaporates fast.
Your website also gives Google more to work with. Every page, every service description, and every bit of helpful text is another chance to match what someone is searching for. A one-line social media page cannot do that. A real site can.
Make sure your website clearly states:
- What you do and where you do it
- How to contact you (phone, form, and address)
- Proof you are the real deal (photos, reviews, a friendly about page)
Use the words your customers use
Google is basically a matching machine. Someone types "emergency plumber near downtown" and Google looks for businesses whose information matches those words. So use the natural, everyday phrases your customers actually say.
If you are a hair salon that does balayage, say balayage on your site. If you are a coach who helps people quit smoking, write that plainly. Do not hide behind clever slogans. Describe your services the way a customer would describe their problem, and you will start showing up for the right searches.
Keep your information consistent everywhere
Your name, address, and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear online. Your website, your Google listing, your Facebook page, your Yelp profile. When these match, Google feels confident it knows who you are. When they clash (an old address here, a disconnected phone number there), that doubt can push you down in the results.
Do a quick audit. Search your own business name and see what comes up. Clean up anything that is wrong or outdated.
Be patient, but stay active
Showing up on Google is not a one-and-done task. It rewards businesses that keep at it. Post an update now and then, add fresh photos, gather a steady trickle of reviews, and keep your website current. Little by little, you climb.
Where a done-for-you site fits in
If all of this sounds sensible but you simply do not have the hours to build and maintain a website on top of running your business, that is completely fair. Most owners we talk to bounced off a DIY builder halfway through and never finished.
That is exactly what our design team handles for you. You hand over your domain, tell us about your business, and we build you a clean, professional, search-friendly website. It is ready to launch in about 48 hours. The cost is $79 to launch, then $9 a month for hosting, and any time you want a change (new hours, new photos, a fresh service), you just ask us and we make it happen. You never have to wrestle with a builder again.
Getting found on Google starts with a website worth finding. If you want one built for you, we would love to help.
