What Should Go Above the Fold on Your Homepage
The top of your homepage, the part people see before they scroll, is the most valuable real estate you own. Most visitors decide in a few seconds whether you are worth their time, and they decide based on that first screen alone. Yet a lot of small business sites waste it on a giant logo, a stock photo, and a vague slogan. Let us fix that. Here is what actually belongs above the fold, and why each piece earns its spot.
Say what you do in plain words
The single most important thing on your homepage is a clear statement of what you do and who you do it for. Not a clever tagline, not a mission statement, just a plain sentence a stranger understands instantly. Something like Family owned plumbing in Tucson, same day service. If a visitor cannot tell what you offer within a couple of seconds, they leave, and no amount of design further down the page will save you. Clarity first, cleverness never.
Show where you are and who you serve
For a local business, place matters enormously. Someone searching wants to know they are in the right spot. Putting your town or service area up top, even in small text, quietly reassures them. It also helps you show up when people search for your kind of business near them. A visitor who sees their own town on your homepage feels like they have found a local, not a faraway company that may not even come to them.
Give them one obvious next step
Above the fold needs one clear action, and only one. A big, obvious button that says Call Now, Book Online, or Get a Free Quote. Not five competing buttons, not a menu of options, one clear thing you want them to do. When you give people a single obvious step, more of them take it. When you give them a wall of choices, more of them freeze and leave. Decide what the most valuable action is and make it impossible to miss.
A real image that shows the real you
The image up top should show your actual work, your team, or your space, not a generic stock photo of people in suits. A real photo of your storefront, your crew, or a finished job instantly makes you feel like a real business a person can trust. If your photos are not great yet, one honest, decent photo beats a slick fake one every time. People can smell stock imagery, and it quietly tells them you might not be the real thing.
What to leave for later
Just as important is what does not belong up top. Your full history, your list of every service, a wall of text about your values, the awards from 2009, all of that can wait for lower on the page or a separate page. The top is for a fast, confident answer to three questions: what is this, is it for me, and what do I do next. Answer those cleanly and people will keep scrolling. Bury them and people will keep clicking, right back to the search results.
Where we come in
You do not have to become a designer to have a website that looks like one built it. That is the part we handle. At Catapult, we build you a polished, professional site that pulls the whole picture together, so it works hard for you instead of quietly turning customers away.
It is $79 to launch, then $9 a month for hosting with unlimited change requests. Most sites go live in about 48 hours, and you keep your own domain. Anytime you want a tweak, you just ask and we do it. When you are ready for a site that carries its weight, we are ready to build it.
